What-is-feminism
One fine weekend, I was watching "Sachin - a billion dreams". While the movie is all about Sachin, something else holds my attention. It's Anjali, his wife. As she said, situation demanded that one of them to leave their career and she decides to leave her career for him. I was so furious thinking why should females always sacrifice the career for their significant other. However, as the movie ended, I had different thoughts.
She, like everyone else, had all the rights to pursue her career. She decided to do otherwise for Sachin of course, may be herself and most importantly all the cricket fans. I'm no one to say if she was right or wrong. But I have been wondering since then what would have been the situation had she decided to pursue her medical career. What would have happened if Sachin had left his career for her? How would Sachin's fans (both male and female) have reacted towards her or him?
Society might have accepted working women, but it hasn't accepted non-working men. It's choice of a women to work or not, but it's not the choice of men. It's ok to marry a non-working girl, it's not acceptable to marry a non-working man. My heart goes out to the women who're forced to quit career post marriage. I'm still happy to say that there are many fortunate ones who have their prerogative to work or not after marriage. But a man is always expected to earn for his family. I'm not trying to take a side here. Instead, I'm trying so see why are we lacking behind despite so many attempts to move the women forward. What I see is that efforts have been one sided. A plan can't nourish well until it gets all the nutrients. It will grow only up to a limit if provided only water.
The situation with Sachin & Anjali; comes across so many couples and every one handles it in their best possible manner. I wish well to all of them. It doesn't hurt feminism if a woman gives up her career for her partner and in the same way, it doesn't hurt masculinism if a man gives up his career for his partner. However, I'm afraid to say few might have ended up taking the decision they thought would be acceptable to society, but not they really wanted in first place. "Don't care about what others say" - it's easier said than done. Most of the things we all do is because we're thinking what will so and so person say. It could be posting an update on facebook, a picture on instagram, etc etc.
Nevertheless, we have come a long way and there is still a lot more to cover..
